Largemouth Bass

Micropterus salmoides — also called Bucketmouth, Green bass

America's most-targeted gamefish. Aggressive ambush predator that holds tight to cover — grass lines, laydowns, docks, brush piles, riprap. Largemouth tolerate warm, off-color water that other bass species avoid, which makes them dominant in southern reservoirs and farm ponds.

Range
Lower 48 states, every major reservoir and most farm ponds.
Size
Typical 1–4 lb; trophy 8 lb+; world record 22 lb 4 oz.
Spawn temp
62–68°F
Best seasons
Pre-spawn (spring), Post-spawn, Fall transition

Best baits for largemouth bass

  • Squarebill crankbait (shad / craw patterns)
  • Soft plastic stick bait (wacky / weightless)
  • Jig + craw trailer
  • Chatterbait (white / chartreuse)
  • Frog (summer mats)

Season by season

Spring (pre-spawn → spawn)

Stage on secondary points inside spawning bays in 5–12 ft. As water hits 60°F+ they move shallow to bed. Lipless cranks, chatterbaits, and wacky-rigged sticks crush them now.

Summer

Split between deep ledges (offshore brush, 15–25 ft) and shallow grass mats. Deep crank, Carolina rig, big worm offshore; frog and punch rig in mats.

Fall

Follow shad into the backs of creeks. Match the bait size — squarebill, spinnerbait, swim jig in 2–8 ft. One of the year's best windows.

Winter

Suspended over deep timber or wintering on steep bluffs. Jerkbait, blade bait, slow-rolled jig. Bite is narrow but quality is big.

Local secret

Find the closest hard cover to the nearest deep break and fan-cast it. Pre-spawn fish stage on the first secondary point inside a spawning pocket — start there.
