Perch
Walleye
Sander vitreus — also called Marble eye
The Midwest's signature gamefish and arguably the best-eating freshwater species in North America. Walleye relate to structure, current, and low-light conditions. Trolling, jigging, and live-bait rigs all produce — the right one depends on season and water clarity.

Season by season
Spring
Stage below dams and at river mouths during the spawn. Jig + minnow vertical or pitched into current seams. Slot limits apply in most states.
Summer
Pull crawler harnesses on bottom bouncers across main-lake structure in 18–30 ft, or troll cranks at depth. Find the bait, find the fish.
Fall
Biggest fish of the year. Cast jerkbaits and big minnow plastics on shallow rock at night — true trophy window on Erie and Mille Lacs.
Winter
Ice fishing capital. Jigging spoons, dead-stick rattle reels with shiners on rock-to-mud transitions in 12–22 ft.
Local secret
Walleye are light-sensitive. Best bites are dawn, dusk, and through the night — or on overcast, wind-chopped days. 'Walleye chop' is real.
